After their one and only serious downhill outing of the season, the pair’s rivalry will heat up in the technical events, Giant Slalom and Slalom, later this week.

But both competitors have mixed feelings about the absence through injury of world cup downhiller Chemmy Alcott.

Tilley said: “In most ways we would prefer that she was here because it is important that we check in against her to see how we are progressing as of course she is a world-class downhiller. But, on the other hand, it leaves the race open for us.”

In the men’s race, Thomas “TJ” Baldwin, the top seed, was also ruing the absence of a serious rival in the shape of injured Scot Dougie Crawford, but the Norwich skier skied a confident run to win by over two seconds.

The top Scot in the race was Glasgow’s Alistair Stang, who finished seventh.
