Skiing: Crash victim Albrecht eyes comeback

Swiss skier Daniel Albrecht will make his World Cup comeback in today's giant slalom at Beaver Creek, Colorado, almost two years after being involved in a horrific crash in Kitzbuehel.

"After discussing it with my coaches I'll be starting Sunday's race. Why? Because I feel good about my form. I'm sure of myself and I just want to give it a try," the 2007 super-combined world champion said. Albrecht, who spent several weeks in a coma after his accident on the treacherous Streif piste in January 2009, took part in official training in Lake Louise last week but decided against competing.

"The goal on Sunday is simply to race, it's not about points or results but about racing again," he said. "I have no memory of how it feels on race day, how it goes when you are at the start. It's important for me to go through this again."

Albrecht claimed one of his four World Cup victories at Beaver Creek three years ago.

Strong winds on the Beaver Creek's Birds of Prey piste forced organisers to call off a men's World Cup downhill on Friday.
