Six Nations: Scotland ‘didn’t cheat enough’

That was the view today of former captain and hooker  Colin Deans, who said: “Scotland were duped by the Welsh more than being let down by the ref at the scrum.

“When it comes to the scrum in top-level rugby the best cheats win and we didn’t cheat enough.

“The Scots never cottoned on (that) when the call came for the packs to engage the Welsh would stand still and sometimes even take a small step back while the Scots would stupidly pile in.

“(Ref) Joubert assumed the Scots were going in early and penalised them. Why couldn’t the Scots see what was obvious and delay engaging for that split second like the Welsh?

“I felt sorry for the fans. You had two sets of Northern Hemisphere players controlled by an official from the Southern Hemisphere and that is a recipe for disaster as his scrum law interpretations may be alien.”

n HALF-A-DOZEN Scots are being tipped today for a Lions tour this summer – by a former Calcutta Cup rival.

Jerry Guscott, ex-England centre, said: “Scotland have moved on a stage in terms of pressurising teams, scoring points and keeping themselves in the game. Winning certainly helps when it comes to being noticed for Lions selection and beating France would make a case for some Scottish players. At the moment I would think Stuart Hogg, Tim Visser, Grieg Laidlaw, Kelly Brown, Johnnie Beattie and Euan Murray all have a chance. “
