Simpson on form to keep Dalziel in the Shield hunt

DALZIEL dispatched a combative Edinburgh University side with the minimum of fuss to move into the next round of the Scottish Hydro Shield.

Rab Simpson was the star of their 32-10 victory – the stand-off notching two tries and adding 12 points with his boot. John Harris and Andy Hill scored the other tries.

Elsewhere, Aberdeenshire made it into the next round by the narrowest of margins.

They looked down and out at East Kilbride only for Kenny Penman to cross for a late try and tie the scores at 18-18.

There was no further scoring in extra-time, so Aberdeenshire progressed by dint of having scored three tries to two. Penman scored twice, with Shaun Mountain also touching down, and Parker notching a penalty. Paul Rosie and Gareth Jones scored tries for East Kilbride.

A late Scott Brown penalty saw Kilmarnock squeeze through 14-11 away to Helensburgh. Earlier a Jason Felton try and two David Riding penalties had tied a McKenzie Pierce try and two Brown penalties for Kilmarnock.

Lasswade romped to a 35-5 win over Hillfoots with tries from Craig Quigley, Neil Clark, Bernie Hennessey, Gavin Sharp and Gavin Brown. Brown added all five conversions.

Ant Devlin's 16-point haul saw Greenock Wanderers overcome home side Lenzie. Like Devlin, Danny Scoular scored a try and kicked his side's remaining points but it wasn't enough to prevent Lenzie going down 16-10.

Ellon overcame Ross High 18-10 despite going behind to an early Chris Miller try. Bob Baillie also crossed for the East Lothian men, but Ian Redman and James Young scored tries for Ellon. The boot of Chris Doak swung it as he added eight points.

With the early rounds of the Scottish Hydro Bowl being played regionally to cut down on travel costs, there were few major surprises. Glenrothes, Orkney, Duns, Dunbar and Strathmore all progressed with comfortable home wins, while Aberdeen University, Stathendrick, Cumnock and Isle of Mull won well on the road.
