Shinty: Thain held in reserve by Kings

KINGUSSIE veteran Kevin Thain has been relieved of first-team duties today against Glenurquhart as he tries to carve out a piece of shinty history.

The hugely decorated forward has been used sparingly this season by manager Stephen Borthwick but has scored three times in the last two games.

Despite this, Borthwick has allowed Thain to drop back to the reserves this weekend as they face Skye in a crucial Sutherland Cup semi-final.

Should Kings make it, Thain could gain the distinction of appearing in a Sutherland and Camanachd Cup final in the same season. "Kevin will be back in our plans for the Camanachd Cup semi-final against Kilmallie but we have allowed him to join the reserves this weekend," said Borthwick.

"Kevin has vast experience which he passes onto our youngsters and he is keen to face Skye, so I have agreed."

Kingussie should have the services of James Hutchison, despite the centre line anchor being a greenkeeper at Castle Stuart - the venue for this week's Scottish Open.

With Kyles losing their first match last weekend, all eyes will be on how they respond today as they home in on the Premier League title.

They face Lovat away from home today and have 2010 champions Newtonmore breathing down their necks at the top of the table.
