Shinty: Stewart shines in cup win over Newtonmore

Callum Stewart watched Newtonmore lift the MacTavish Cup last term but his match-winning show on Saturday suggests he could be more pivotal this time.

The youngster struck both goals as holders Newtonmore edged out rivals Kingussie 2-0 in the quarter-finals at The Eilan on Saturday. And he is hopeful that his performances will merit more than a bench place should ‘More make it through to the televised final in June.

“I was on the bench last year when we won this competition but I didn’t get on so it is good to be more involved this year,” he said.

“The boys definitely feel that, with the size of the squad we have, we can go on and do something again in this trophy. We’ve got a good chance against anyone.”

Newtonmore won through despite being minus big-game stars, Danny McRae, Paul MacArthur and Rory Kennedy.

Also in the last four are Lovat, Glen Urquhart and Kilmallie.
