Shinty: MacTavish Cup is one more trophy

Newtonmore added Shinty’s Co Operative MacTavish Cup to their collection of recent trophies yesterday, defeating lower league Lochaber 5-1 in Inverness.

In the end, the Scottish champions had too much for the North Division One side.

“We got off to a great start. I don’t think it was 5-1 because Lochaber played well but we are developing a winning mentality now and that makes the difference,” said 'More boss Norman MacArthur.

No matter how thorough the preparation is, things can always go wrong.

Lochaber found that out as early as a minute into this showcase.

Newtonmore’s Blair MacKintosh drove a corner to the front post and poacher supreme Glen MacKintosh managed to drill the ball into the net at an angle.

At that point, the cynical would have prepared for a deluge of goals.

That wasn’t exactly the result but 'More did edge further ahead in 17 minutes.

Chris Sellar managed to batter his way through several off-balance defenders before slotting past Callum MacDonald for number two.

In the second period, Newtonmore started strongly and in 49 minutes, Sellar got on the scoresheet again, taking advantage of hesitancy to strike into the net.

For Lochaber, it was looking bleak but Scotland man Sean Nicolson provided hope with a drilled shot which squirmed under the feet of Michael Ritchie.

Newtonmore captain John Mackenzie added the garnish, tapping into an empty net to make it 4-1 before adding another on the whistle.
