Shinty: Kingussie win cup at second attempt

Kingussie won the Sutherland Cup on Saturday, two months after losing the final.

In July, Newtonmore defeated Kingussie 5-4 in the Sutherland showcase only to have the trophy taken from them for fielding an ineligible player.

On Saturday, Kingussie had a rare chance to make amends and took it, defeating Glenurquhart 2-0 to take the cup at the second attempt. Savio Genini and veteran Michael Clark were the goal heroes with strikes in the first half.

“We were very pleased to take the silverware. It bodes well for the future as the final four forwards were all teenagers and our Under-14s also won the league on Friday night,” said Kingussie chieftain, Joe Taylor.

“It was very important for us to win the trophy. We didn’t want to go down as the team that got two runners-up medals for the same cup in the same season. I am sure there will be a few people celebrating but then again, most of them are not allowed to because they are still at school.”

Aside from experienced players Michael Clark, John Gibson and Greg McRae, all the Kingussie Cup winning team were under 20.
