Sevens side take a familiar path into Bowl quarter-final

Despite losing their opening two games against France (31-7) and New Zealand (45-0), the Scots finished their pool with a 50-0 victory over Morocco. James Fleming provided the spark in the final game with four tries. New recruit Andrew Skeen, James Eddie, Colin Gregor and Adam Ashe also crossed the Moroccan.

Scotland captain Colin Gregor said: “We’re quite disappointed with the opening two matches today. We really didn’t do ourselves justice. However, we showed character in the final game against Morocco, allowing us to finish the day on a positive note and the manner in which we disposed of them eased the disappointment.

“Today’s results aren’t worth dwelling on. Sevens always demands a quick turnaround, so all we can do now is regroup, learn our lessons and tear through the Bowl competition. Kenya will be tough first up tomorrow, but we can definitely beat them.”

Scotland had started the day brightly when Andrew Turnbull scored his 107th touchdown in the first 15 seconds of the match against France. But the French equalised a minute and a half later, before storming away with a further four tries.

The loss meant the Scots needed a win to reach the Cup quarter-final, but the challenge couldn’t have been any more difficult as they were next up against South African defending champions, New Zealand.

The Kiwis dominated the match and didn’t allow the Scots into the game.
