Second Division round-up: Brechin count their lucky stars as late penalty miss gives them victory

Brechin City remain at the top following their 3-1 win over Airdrie United at Glebe Park, although they were grateful for a late penalty miss by visiting captain Paul Lovering.

Neil Janczyk gave Jim Weir's side the lead in 20 minutes direct from a free kick only for teenager Tony Watt to level six minutes later with a low drive.

Rory McAllister fired Brechin ahead again eight minutes into the second half and Craig Molloy sealed the win in injury time with Lovering erring from the spot in 82 minutes after Scott Sally had been fouled by Paul McLean.

Glebe manager Jim Weir said: "We have played better and I have to give credit to the way Airdrie played. They were always dangerous so getting the three points is great."

Livingston remain second after Robbie Winters' solitary goal after 62 minutes gave them a win in West Lothian over Peterhead. Like leaders Brechin it was a performance built on graft as opposed to guile with Livingston manager Gary Bollan saying: "We have played better and not taken anything from games. I am disappointed with the performance but we have the three points so full marks to the players for sticking at it."

Blue Toon manager Neale Cooper said: "We had opportunities so I am frustrated at leaving here with nothing."

Ayr United moved level on points with third-placed Alloa following a 2-1 win over the Wasps at Somerset Park. The Honest Men dominated the opening 45 minutes and Mark Roberts made up for a glaring miss after only three minutes by giving Ayr a deserved half-time lead. Kevin McDonald levelled matters with a penalty 15 minutes from time after Eddie Malone had fouled Mick Dunlop, only for the home side's Scott McLaughlin's to send in a drive that took a deflection off Alloa midfielder John Grant to loop over Stephen Robertson for the winner.

Ayr manager Brian Reid said: "We want Somerset Park to be a place that teams are fearful of coming to and that is wins over Livingston and Alloa in our last two games here so we are getting there."

Forfar triumphed 3-1 at East Fife with striker Ross Campbell's goal a minute from half-time being cancelled out by Bobby Linn before Martyn Fotheringham and Campbell again scored to take the points back to Station Park.

Loons manager Dick Campbell said: "We carried on where we left off against Ayr last week and those two victories in a row have reignited our season."

Fifers No 2 Jason Dair said: "We have a lot of work ahead of us this season and the first thing we need to do is build confidence in our boys."

Stenhousemuir piled the pressure on bottom side Dumbarton following a 4-0 victory with Paul Quinn scoring early and former Son Ross Clark scoring twice before youngster Grant Plenderleith added a late fourth.

Warriors manager John Coughlin said: "The players responded really well following our defeat at Livingston last weekend. To score four times in a game with a bit of pressure attached to it is great."

His Dumbarton opposite number Jim Chapman said: "Stenhousemuir pressed us from the start and we could not cope. They fully deserved their win."
