Second Division: Ovenstone sets up East Fife victory

EAST FIFE moved into seventh place by defeating Brechin City at New Bayview with a goal in each half setting up a 2-0 win.

John Ovenstone headed the opening goal after eight minutes when he rose to meet a corner from player boss Steve Crawford from six yards out.

Paul McLean impeded Lloyd Young 18 minutes into the second period to give away a spot kick and top scorer Paul McManus slotted home to put the Fifers two up. They had a scare when David Muir fouled Charlie King with 12 minutes to go, however the normally deadly Rory McAllister saw his effort saved by Michael Brown.

Peterhead and Clyde played out a goalless draw and whilst both sides will have been happy to settle for a point it does not help their aspirations at their respective ends of the table.

The Blue Toon, who sit fifth, five points behind Brechin went close through Peter Bruce and the Bully Wee, who are now ten points behind Arbroath, almost stole it at the end with a shot from substitute Aleksandrs Gramovics.

Cowdenbeath fans were probably thinking that their day could not getting any worse after hearing about a proposed merger with Edinburgh side Spartans, however the Blue Brazil supporters that turned up to watch their promotion clash with Stirling Albion only saw 18 minutes of action before the game was abandoned.

There were concerns about the like surface before the game, however referee Thomas Robertson gave the go-ahead. Further snow and rain made the conditions unplayable as well as making the markings on the pitch indistinguishable. The SFL confirmed that the game should be played in the week beginning Monday 26 April.
