Sebastian Vettel back on pole as Di Resta rues poor lap

Sebastian Vettel returned to top spot on the grid at the end of one of the most hotly-contested qualifying sessions of the season yesterday.

The pole for today's Hungarian Grand Prix is Vettel's 23rd of his career and eighth in 11 grands prix this season, but his first for three races, following a lean run by his own high standards.

Lewis Hamilton missed out by 0.163secs to Vettel who posted a lap of one minute 19.815secs.

Hamilton's McLaren team-mate Jenson Button will start third, his best grid slot for five races.

Remarkably, and for the first time this season, Felipe Massa out-qualified Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso, with Red Bull's Mark Webber a surprisingly lowly sixth after starting on pole at the previous two races.

Scotland's Paul di Resta is ready to be aggressive in the race after admitting to a lack of adventure in qualifying. Following a strong practice performance, Di Resta seemed set for a top-ten grid slot in his Force India but was forced to settle for 11th, missing out on a place in the final ten-minute qualifying session by just a tenth of a second to Sauber's Sergio Perez.

Without a point in eight races, Di Resta is eager to make amends. He said: "We definitely didn't maximise our qualifying performance. My final lap in the second session wasn't quite there, so maybe I should have been a bit more adventurous but, at the same time we're 11th. Although I was hoping to be a little higher up, we're definitely within fighting range. It's still a good position to score some points, so we'll go with an aggressive strategy. I think that's the way it has to be."
