Scottish Cup round-up: Thrills and spills but replays loom

THE Scottish Cup produced its usual thrills and spills on a high-scoring first-round Saturday which ended with only ten of the 17 ties producing a winner.

Three Junior teams have made it through to the second round so far along with two sides each from the South of Scotland, East of Scotland and Highland Leagues and the scholars of Glasgow University.

The names of the 14 sides that drew at the weekend will join the ten winners, Wick Academy who received a bye, along with Highland League winners Buckie Thistle, runners up Cove Rangers, East of Scotland winners Spartans, South of Scotland Champions Threave Rovers and the ten sides in the SFL Third Division in Wednesday's draw.

Beith won the battle of the Junior sides as they defeated Linlithgow Rose 2-0 thanks to a goal in the first half from full-back Mark McShane and a late clincher from substitute Joe Bradley.

Beith manager John Millar said: "The players put in a tremendous effort and we had to withstand a fair amount of pressure in the first half. Mark's goal gave us something to defend and Joe did brilliantly to get in for the second."

Linlithgow manager Dave Baikie said: "I am disappointed to be going out but there is not much to complain about."

Civil Service Strollers 1

Wigtown and Bladnoch 2

Wigtown manager Micky Dougan was celebrating his first ever Scottish Cup win - as player and manager. After a penalty edged out Strollers three minutes from time, he said: "I've played with the likes of Stranraer and other teams but never got a Scottish Cup win. And it's been the same as a manager until now. We're certainly celebrating this one. "

Strollers took the lead with a Craig Dickson goal on 40 minutes. But sub Alan Murdoch, who came on at the interval, hammered in the equaliser in 55 minutes and then Adam Dougan was pulled down in the box in the 87th minute and Stewart Cluckie fired home the spot kick.

Coldstream 1

Forres Mechanics 3

Forres had the match sewn up in the first half-hour when they hit the net three times. The Highland League side were too strong for the East Division 1 outfit who fought gallantly in the second half to try to get back into the game. Kyle Scott was the Forres hero with two goals as they dominated the opening spell. The Streamers had a chances in the second half and John Crawford came close with a drive from 25 yards on the hour mark.Crawford pulled one back for the home team ten minutes from time when he headed home a corner.

Deveronvale 0

Inverurie Locos 0

Deveronvale and Inverurie Locos have it all to do again at Harlaw Park after a dour 0-0 draw and fans will be hoping for more exciting fare in the replay. Michele Lombardi went closest for the home side in the opening period with an effort that was just off-target. Both teams had decent claims for penalties rejected by referee Scott MacDonald and the game ended goalless.

Edinburgh City 1

Defenders of both teams were on top for most of the match, although a second-half strike by City's Ross Guthrie almost broke the deadlock, flashing just inches past the post. With the 90 minutes almost up, City's pushed forward one last time and a wonder strike from Spaniard Jorge Vinnelli ensured victory.

Edinburgh University came close to adding a cup win to their flying start in the league as they led 2-1 against Brora thanks to Benjiman Antoni's last-minute goal, but Danny Mackay levelled three minutes into injury time to force a replay. Earlier the students had taken the lead through a Colin Cameron shot after 15 minutes, before Nigel Mackenzie equalised for Brora after half an hour.

Fraserburgh 3

St Cuthbert's 3

Saints manager Jim McCrossan slammed his side after throwing away a 2-1 lead with ten minutes to go. For Saints had to rely on a 94th-minute equaliser from Gary Redpath to force a replay this weekend at Kirkcudbright.

McCrossan said: "I'm pleased that we got a draw in the end. But I'm not happy that we were two with seven minutes to go and in control of the game. Then we lost two goals and it was only a desperate effort at the end that got us a replay."

Also on the scoresheet were Gary Hind and Scott Gault for Saints, with Fraserburgh's goals coming from Graham Johnson (2) and Dane Ballard.

Gala Fairydean 1

Sunnybank 6

Aberdeen Junior side Sunnybank hit Gala Fairydean for six on their own Netherdale pitch to storm through to the next round. Steven Bartlett grabbed a double with David Greig and Nicky Gordon also scoring before Gala netted through Paul Young. Gordon scored again before the home side had Ross Glass and Greg Hay dismissed with visiting sub Chris Steel adding the sixth.

Glasgow University 1

Burntisland Shipyard 0

Glasgow University scored right at the death with Paul Ruddy putting his side through to the second round for the first time since 1976 with a fine strike from distance.

Golspie Sutherland 2

Fort William 2

Fort William's bid to make the second round for the first time in their history looked on when Ian McLellan opened at Golspie after just 11 minutes. But Stuart Thomson netted after 34 minutes to level and struck again from the spot after 63 minutes.McLellan rescued a replay for Fort, after 75 minutes.

Hawick Royal Albert 0

Dalbeattie Star 3

Star are into the second round but they made if difficult for themselves after scoring twice in the opening 17 minutes. Sean Milligan should have put them ahead in two minutes when he rounded Albert keeper Willie Turner but hit the post from close range. But two minutes later Milligan's cross was headed home by Nikki White.

In 17 minutes Milligan shot through the Hawick defensive wall to Jak Dingwall who hammered a low shot into the net from 12 yards. Star had chances galore but couldn't finish and it was the 89th minute before Milligan had a great run on the left, cut in and fired in a ten-yard shot high into the net.

Huntly 2

Girvan 2

Huntly face a long trip south after letting a two goal lead slip against Ayrshire side Girvan. Grant Campbell and Michael McGinlay had Steve Paterson's men two ahead before the prolific Michael Moffat hit back with a double to force a replay.

Lossiemouth 0

Whitehill Welfare 2

Whitehill Welfare kept up a proud unbeaten record away to Highland League teams as Lossiemouth paid for failing to take their chances.

The East of Scotland Premier League side weathered an early storm before triumphing through goals from Andrew Kidd and Jordan Hall.

Whitehill boss Paul Cavanagh said: "The financial rewards for small clubs are massive and this is what we need. It's not a lot of money to some, but to clubs like us, it's a lifeline. We prepared right, stayed over in Inverness, and the guys repaid that with a performance."

Newton Stewart 1

The goals came in the opening spell of a tough cup tie at Blairmount Park, but the sides will have to fight it out again next Saturday

Newton were shocked when Preston got an eight-minute penalty which Stuart Miller fired home. But Newton came back and Stewart Beggs sent over a corner in the 12th minute which Sean Taylor powered into the net for the equaliser.

Beggs had a chance with a 54th minute shot and near the end a Miller had a header off the bar as Preston went all out in the dying minutes.

Preston came away strongly in the second half and had a number of chances but just couldn't find the net.

Rothes 2

Nairn County 2

Rothes and Nairn will meet again next weekend after the visitors threw away a two-goal lead. Robbie Duncanson put Nairn ahead after 22 minutes and Craig Campbell's penalty doubled the lead before the break. Ross Duncan gave Rothes hope after 55 minutes and Michael Fletcher levelled with 11 remaining.

Selkirk 1

Bo'ness 6

Bo'ness got one up on their great rivals and neighbours Linlithgow by progressing to round two thanks to a comprehensive 6-1 win at Selkirk. The Yarrow Park side went ahead through Des Sutherland and they were made to pay for that as Ross Hamilton, Paul Shields, Fraser Forrest, Andy Shirra with two and Martin Ure all scored.Bo'ness manager Willie Newbigging said: "We started off nervously but got there in the end."

Vale of Leithen 1

Keith 3

Keith were another side to win over East of Scotland opposition and Cammy Keith was their hero with a hat-trick in their 3-1 win over a Vale of Leithen side who had led through John Hall.
