Scottish Cup round-up: Defeat to Sunnybank leaves Albion manager fearing the axe

The second round of the Scottish Cup belonged to Junior sides Sunnybank and Bo'ness as the Champions from the North and the East Regions of the country saw off Third Division Senior opponents.

Aberdeen outfit Sunnybank stunned hosts Albion Rovers 1-0 thanks to Nicky Gordon's close-range strike after ten minutes to leave Coatbridge manager Paul Martin fearful for his job despite two years of progress at the club.

Martin, the current Third Division manager of the month, said: "This result wipes out years of development at this club and it is a dark day for me personally. If the board decide to sack me for this result I cannot complain."

Sunnybank boss Tom McPherson said: "It was a great all-round performance and a fantastic result for the club. We were under a bit of pressure in the second half but held on."

Bo'ness shrugged off the loss of an early Jamie Brough goal to defeat ten times winners Queen's Park 2-1 at Newtown Park, with former Celtic striker Paul Shields scoring the winner with 16 minutes to go.

The experienced Derek Fleming knocked in a first-half injury-time penalty that was hotly disputed after the BU's Chris Donnelly had tangled with Spiders defender Paul Gallagher. Bo'ness manager Willie Newbigging gave credit to the Junior side's fans saying: "Our fans were fantastic. I had been saying this was the biggest game in Bo'ness for over 70 years and the supporters turned out to be our 12th man."

West Region Junior Champions Beith also won as they defeated Glasgow University 8-1 to progress with eight different members of the Ayrshire side scoring.

Berwick Rangers defeated Clyde 2-1 with all the goals coming in the second half. Paul Currie headed the Borderers in front before Paul McMullan made it two before Kevin Finlayson netted for the Bully Wee with 14 minutes left.

Berwick boss Jimmy Crease admitted that he gave his side a bit of an ear bashing at half-time saying: "We did not play in the first half and I reminded the players we needed to start competing. We had a better shape in the second period and certainly applied ourselves better."

In the other all SFL game Montrose and Arbroath are to meet again after a 1-1 draw at Links Park after Aaron Sinclair's first-half goal for the Gable Endies was cancelled out by Steven Doris.

Stranraer, meanwhile, created a club record when they knocked nine without reply past St Cuthbert's Wanderers with Armand One and Craig Malcolm bagging hat-tricks.Stair Park manager Keith Knox said: "Scoring early was important and to be three up after 18 minutes allowed us to settle down and enjoy the occasion."

Elgin progressed 5-3 over Highland neighbours Brora with Craig Gunn scoring twice in the first half to put them on their way with Jason Crooks adding a third just after half- time. Brora pulled a goal back through Andrew Neil only for Paul Millar and a Barry Wilson penalty to open up a four-goal advantage. Ronnie Jones and Alex MacLeod made it an interesting last five minutes at Borough Briggs.

Third Division team's East Stirling and Annan earned replays after goalless draws at Forres Mechanics and Preston Athletic.

Buckie won 7-1 at Wigtown & Bladnoch with Donnie Munro and Murray scoring doubles as the home side's Stuart Cluchie was dismissed as well as the visiting Zander Sutherland and Jamie Shewan.

Girvan returned from the near 600 mile round trip to Golspie Sutherland with a 2-2 draw, although they were seconds away from winning the game Former St Mirren and Ross County striker Alex Bone had given Golspie the lead through a penalty on 55 minutes, however George Wallace's header and a Jason Gunn own goal had the Ayrshire men ahead.

A further penalty was awarded just before the end and Bone was alert enough to nod home after his effort from 12 yards was saved.

Golspie manager Ricky Michalek said: "It is a long journey to make next week but I wanted it with a minute to go."

Deveronvale won through 1-0 over South of Scotland team Dalbeattie Star thanks to a late Mark Smith goal however the Southern champions prospered with Threave Rovers defeating hosts Edinburgh City 4-2 in the Capital.

Dougie Gair had City 2-1 in front only for Andrew Donley, Sam Warren and James Baty to turn things around.

Cup specialists Spartans, also from Edinburgh, won 3-0 at Keith with Keith MacLeod, Alex King and Jack Beesley all netting and Cove Rangers knocked out Nairn County in the all-Highland League affair thanks to Roddy Black's goal seven minutes from time.

The game between Whitehill Welfare and long distance travellers Wick Acadamy was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch and they will face each other this weekend as will the clubs involved in drawn games.
