Scottish cup preview: David Wilson aiming to pull of shock against Boroughmuir in new-look competition

The man who led Glasgow Hawks to Scottish Cup glory will be at the helm of his current side Dalziel this afternoon as they look to record a shock victory over top-flight club Boroughmuir as the new-look Premier Cup gets underway.

Back in 2007 David Wilson was in charge at Hawks when they defeated Edinburgh Accies at Murrayfield to lift the trophy. Although it would take quite some effort for Dalziel to do similar come April the Premier Three promotion chasers are looking forward to taking on 'Muir at Dalziel Park.

This term the top 36 clubs in the country have been split into nine pools of four with seven pool winners progressing to the quarter-finals and the other two pool winners playing off for the eighth spot. The final will take place at the national stadium on April 16.

Since winning the National One title with 22 victories from 22 matches last season Dalziel have been hit hard by injuries in their first 10 matches in Premier Three.

They are currently third in the division behind Whitecraigs and Hamilton and president Khalid Faqir has been delighted with the influence the experienced Wilson has had on the squad since he joined in the summer.

He said: "We wanted a coach who would bring an intensity and 'game day attitude' to training and David has certainly done that and he is a great guy to have at the club.

"We have had a lot of injuries over the last few months, including captain Gillon Duguid, but the players have stuck in well and we are looking forward to welcoming a Premier One side to our home ground as we tend to play well against bigger clubs."

Boroughmuir travel west with young back-row Cammy Orr given a chance to impress and Harry Leonard given another shot at stand-off with Ally Warnock on the bench.

Also in pool H Stirling County meet Peebles in a pre-cursor to their Premier B clash later in February. County are without Colin Eadie, Tim Clarke, Mike Doneghan and Garry Mountford.

Whitecraigs will feel they have a chance of turning over top flight West of Scotland in pool I with the former having not lost a match so far this season.

In pool A Hamilton will be looking forward to welcoming Currie to their revamped ground at Laigh Bent with the experienced Richie Maxton leading from the front. Currie name James Johnstone on the wing for the clash with the rest of the side unchanged from last week.

Holders Ayr should have no problems against Premier Three strugglers Perthshire, while Melrose coach Craig Chalmers gives starts to fringe men like centre Joe Helps as they travel to Ardrossan Accies.

Elsewhere the other matches that stand out include a Border derby between Hawick and Kelso at Mansfield Park, Selkirk travelling to Morgan and Falkirk heading to Gala. All matches kick off at 2pm.
