Scotstoun Warriors: Previewing Glasgow’s season

NEW coach, new players, new era. We look at Glasgow’s chances this season.

MEET THE NEW BOYS

Taylor Paris: The winger played for Canada aged 18 and, one year older, signed a one-year deal for Glasgow.

Angus Macdonald: He comes from good stock because father Hamish played for the All Blacks as did one uncle. However, the flanker’s two caps came back in 2005 and he failed to impress in Japan.

Tim Swinson: The London-born lock is not huge but he’s a hard-nosed grafter. Qualifies for Scotland but the competition in the boiler house is hot, hot, hot.

Viliami Ma’afu: This multi-talented sportsman has represented Tonga at golf and tennis as well as rugby. Will only add to the competition in the third row.

Byron McGuigan: The Namibian-born centre/wing has been playing sevens but now joins the Warriors full time. A possible solution at No.13?

Sean Lamont: The big winger is a 100 per cent character but, at the age of 31, his best years may be behind him.

Nikola Matawalu: The Fijian scrum-half gave the Scots the run-around in Lautoka just a few months ago but whether his speed and skills will survive a Scottish winter is another matter.

WE’LL MISS

Freddy “Irn Bru” Aramburu never gave less than 100 per cent and Big Richie Gray has swapped Scotstoun for Sale.

KEY PLAYER

Either Ruaridh Jackson or Duncan Weir has to put their hand up this season.

STRENGTHS

The squad is tight and they play for each other. Glasgow grind out close matches, although the bigger Scotstoun pitch may see a more expansive approach.

WEAKNESS

Scored just 1.5 tries per game in the league. The return of DTH van der Merwe from injury should help improve that stat. Lack an outstanding outside centre.

OPENING MATCH

Ulster away on Friday.

ONES TO WATCH

No.8 Ryan Wilson. And Fijian scrum-half Niko Matawalu is electric on a firm track.

IT’S A BIG YEAR FOR

Centre Alex Dunbar, who may now have the belief to go with his undoubted ability.

DON’T ASK

Where’s Sean?

INSTEAD COMMENT UPON

The enthusiasm and energy that Gregor Townsend brings to the squad.
