Scots Seniors held to draw by Welsh

Scotland's veteran golfers had to settle for a share of the spoils in their opening match of the Senior Home Internationals at Crail yesterday.

All square with Wales after the morning foursomes, the hosts edged in front when Scottish Senior No1 Tony Stafford beat Keith Stimpson 3 and 1 in the top singles tie.

Broomieknowe's David Gardner pitched in with a 4 and 3 victory over Robert Broad while Edzell's Jim Watt beat Jeff Thomas by a similar margin. But defeats for Colin Christy, Ian Taylor and Scottish champion Scott Macdonald saw the Welsh grab a draw.

In the day's other clash, Ireland, aiming for a third title in a row, showed their class with a 6-3 win over new European champions England.
