Scots secure British berths for Shanghai

Scots Robbie Renwick and David Carry celebrated selection for the World Championships in Shanghai next month when they headed a Scottish medal haul in the 400m freestyle at last night's British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield.

Edinburgh University's Kris Gilchrist, the 2008 Olympian, also made the World Championship team in these final round of trails by winning the 100m breaststroke in 1:00.99. He will now join fellow-Scot, Michael Jamieson, who had qualified for Shanghai by winning the British Championship in Manchester in March. Renwick, the Commonwealth Games 200m freestyle champion, won the British title in Manchester three months ago, but was devastated that his time was too slow for the trip to China. But he trimmed his time by three seconds and secured selection in 3:48.60. Carry, the double Commonwealth champion from 2006, showed he is still a major contender by finishing second in 3:49.42 and also making the World team. Warrender's Lewis Smith, the fastest from the morning heats, snatched the bronze medal in 3:52.27.

In the women's 200m freestyle, Scot Caitlin McClatchey, who missed much of last year with illness, boosted her chances of gaining relay selection at the World Championships by taking the silver medal behind a resurgent Joanne Jackson.

England's Jackson has suffered with asthma since winning the silver medal at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, but has slowly been returning to form and she took the gold in 1:58.32 and that was good enough to clinch her selection. McClatchey touched for silver in 1:58.56.

Garioch's Hannah Miley, who has already qualified for the World Championships in the two medley events also made her bid for a relay place by taking fourth place in 1:59.34.

The 21-year-old won both the 200m and 400m individual medley at the weekend's Mare Nostrum Tour in Monaco and decided not to enter the 200m medley yesterday. In her absence, the title went to Bath's Siobhan-Marie O'Connor in 2:14.14. Craig McNally (Warrender) claimed a bronze medal in the 50m backstroke, an event won by world champion, Liam Tancock in 25.05. Luke Wood (Loughborough) was second in 26.06 with the Edinburgh 19-year-old third in 26.10. Iain Macmillan (Edinburgh University) was the fastest in the heats in the 200m butterfly, and he took the silver medal in the final, a second the experienced Michael Rock's 1:57.25. Kathryn Johnstone (Edinburgh University) completed the day's Scottish medal tally by taking a silver in the 50m breaststroke in 32.27 behind Anastasia Christoforou (32.04).
