Scots fail to capitalise on possession

A LATE converted try was not enough to ensure victory for the Scotland 7s team against France on day one of the IRB Sevens World Series event in Hong Kong.

Having conceded an early try, Scotland proceeded to play with the majority of possession but struggled to convert that possession into points in a 12-7 defeat.

Coach Stephen Gemmell said: "It's a missed opportunity. France had only two chances to score and they took them. We, however, had about 60 per cent of possession but lacked patience and discipline. Our game then became flat which played into France's hands."

The Scots' only score came from winger Andrew Turnbull with Mike Adamson converting.

They will play Chinese Taipei this morning before facing World Series leaders New Zealand in their final pool match.

The latter two nations also clashed yesterday with the All Blacks running in nine tries en route to a 59-5 victory.

Elsewhere, Samoa started their bid for a third consecutive tournament win with a 40-12 triumph over Italy. Fiji, winners of the Wellington leg of the series, posted the highest score of the first day as Setefano Cakau scored a hat-trick in a 12-try 82-7 victory over Thailand, while England beat hosts Hong Kong 45-0.
