Scots can't stop Europe victory

Scottish trio Michael Stewart, Ross Kellett and James Byrne suffered team disappointment in Italy as GB&I's amateurs lost their grip on the St Andrews Trophy at Castelconturbia near Milan.

Nigel Edwards' side lost 14-10 to the Continent of Europe as the hosts claimed only their fourth win in 28 stagings of the biennial clash and a first since the match was last held on Italian soil in 1998.

Trailing 7-5 after Friday's opening session, GB&I clawed themselves to within a point as Scottish champion Stewart and Colville Park youngster Kellett beat French pair Johan Lopez-Lazaro and Romain Wattel to help the visitors win the session 2.-1.. But GB&I's hopes of landing a sixth successive St Andrews Trophy were dashed in the singles as the Europeans eased over the winning line.

There was disappointment for GB&I as the under-18 team, featuring Scottish duo Grant Forrest and Scott Gibson, lost 15.-8. to Europe in the Jacques Leglise Trophy.
