Scots Byrne and Stewart join Lewis in Walker Cup

Tom Lewis, the 20-year-old who led The Open with an amateur record 65 last month, was named yesterday in the Britain and Ireland side for the Walker Cup match against the United States at Royal Aberdeen on September 10-11.

Lewis, from Welwyn Garden City, went on to win the Silver Medal at Royal St George's.

His compatriot Stiggy Hodgson is the only survivor from the team beaten 16 to 9 at Merion two years ago.

Scotland has two representatives in Troon's Michael Stewart and James Bynre of Banchory, the runners-up in the last two Amateur Championships. Both the reserves are Scots with Aberdeen's David Law having missed out on the event in his home city. Ross Kellett from the Colville Park club in North Lanarkshire also just missed out.

Welshman Rhys Pugh is, at 17, the youngest member of the side, which will be led by non-playing captain Nigel Edwards. and there are two Irishmen, Paul Cutler and Alan Dunbar. The other players, all English, are Steven Brown, Jack Senior and Andy Sullivan.
