Scots bowlers seal Gold with England victory

Bowling’s fantastic four staged a bouncing huddle on the greens of Kelvingrove today and then when asked where they planned to celebrate their gold medal quipped: “Every pub in Glasgow.”

Paul Foster, David Peacock, Neil Speirs and not forgetting Alex “Tattie” Marshall - one of the great characters of these Games - beat England 16-8 in the final of the men’s fours.

Foster, who earlier won the men’s pairs with Marshall, said: “It’s fantastic, an unbelievable feeling, and to do it with such great friendship between us is just incredible.”

Tattie may be the the star of the team, the bowling competition and a good chunk of the Games, but he stressed the win was a real team effort. “We play as a team and win as a team,” he said. “The four of us deserve the credit, not just me, and the other guys have been terrific. They’ve got to get the bowls in for me to play the shots.”

Nevertheless, when it was pointed out that fans at Kelvingrove had been waving banners proclaiming “Tattie for First Minister”, Foster said: “I’d vote for him. He’s an absolute legend. What he’s done in the game, 19 world titles, will probably never be beaten. All of us look up to him.”

Tattie made headlines with his pairs triumph celebration, best described as “Get it right up yez.” Again this had been an Auld Enemy clash. “After what happened last time I wasn’t going to do that again,” he said. “But I’m not telling you what was said in the huddle!”
