Scotland’s one-club men, No 9: Willie Waddell (Rangers)

He signed for Rangers at the age of 17 in 1939 and remained there until his retirement in 1955. The winger won five League titles and four Scottish caps and played for the national side on 17 occasions.

When he hung up his boots, he took the manager’s job at Kilmarnock and led them to a surprise championship in 1964-65, with a thrilling last-day 2-0 win at Tynecastle pipping Hearts on goal average.

He was appointed Rangers manager in 1969 and was at the helm during the 1971 Ibrox Disaster and a year later the Cup-Winners’ Cup triumph in Barcelona. After the tragedy of ‘71, Waddell spearheaded the redevelopment of Ibrox. He handed over to Jock Wallace in 1972 but remained involved with Rangers as director, general manager and vice-chairman until his death in 1992
