Schools swimmming: Golden double for Jordan Lamb as Scots medal in UK Games

SWIMMING: Dunfermline High School’s Jordan Lamb was a double gold medallist in the 100m and 200m backstroke at the Sainsbury’s UK School Games in London.

A member of the Fife Performance squad and coached by John Dougal, the 15-year-old’s next target is the British Youth Championships in July.

And having had a taste of a major multi-sport event, he now has an eye on the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

“Jordan is a very talented swimmer,” said Dougal. “It will take a lot of hard work to make it to the Glasgow Games, but you never say never.”

Lucy Hope (Jedburgh Grammar), top performer in the 15-16 year section at Brodies Scottish Schools’ Swimming Championships in January, continued her impressive run by winning the 100m backstroke gold and a bronze in the 200m.

Other Scots to win gold were Craig Bowman (Beath High School), in the 100m butterfly, and Duncan Scott (Strathallan School) in the 200m individual medley. He added a silver in the 400m distance.

Bronze medals went to Rebecca Murray (Braes High School), in the 400m freestyle, Jessica Christie (Westhill Academy), in the 100m Freestyle and Suleman Butt (Aberdeen Grammar) in the 100m Backstroke.

One of the furthest travelled taking part in London was Donnie Price, from Sandwick Junior High School in Shetland. He was rewarded with a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle.

A member of the South Mainland Swimming Club – his mum, Jan, is one of the coaches – Donnie is used to having to make long journeys to keep match fit.

Next month, he hopes to be at the newly refurbished Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh for the Scottish Gas National Championships.

Scotland’s youngest competitor was 13-year-old Inverkeithing pupil Tain Bruce, who finished sixth in the girls 400m individual medley.
