Schools rugby: Stewart's-Melville hit top form for all-Edinburgh pool match

Stewart's-Melville warmed up for today's round two pool match in the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools under-18 Cup clash against Fettes College with an impressive 52-12 weekend win over Glasgow High School.

After building a narrow 14-9 half-time lead, the Edinburgh side motored away from their opponents after the break.

Fettes go into the game today having lost to Glenalmond 38-8 on Saturday and having already lost to Heriot's in the second-round pool stage.

Heriot's, who had no first XV match at the weekend, travel to Morayshire tomorrow for a cup game against Gordonstoun.

Cup holders Edinburgh Academy underlined their excellent form this season with a resounding 79-5 cup defeat of Bell-Baxter High School last Wednesday before beating a below-strength Hutchesons' Grammar School 51-0 on Saturday.

The Academy now face Strathallan in the cup on Saturday. Their opponents posted an encouraging performance against Merchiston on Saturday despite the 30-6 reverse.

For their part, Merchiston play Glenalmond at Colinton on Saturday.

At Myreside, George Watson's College made a good start to their second round pool cup matches with a 43-10 win over North Berwick High School, with winger Dominic Johnson scoring four tries alongside scores from lock Ali Middleton, stand-off Andrew McMillan and replacement full back Euan McKean. McMillan kicked four conversions.

Meanwhile, in youth club rugby Musselburgh remain undefeated in the top division of the Edinburgh and Lothian League after defeating Haddington Colts 33-5.

Musselburgh's tries came from centre Rory Watt, flanker Luke Hutson, centre Ryan Gray and wingers Sean Gray and Calum Dickson. Stand-off Calum Kerr kicked four conversions.

Musselburgh look certain to finish top of this league to qualify for the National Youth Cup. Their closest challengers are Boroughmuir, who consolidated second spot in the table with a 33-3 win over the defending champions Currie Colts.

In the Borders Semi-Junior League Selkirk YC moved up into second place as a result of their 25-10 win over Kelso Quins on Saturday.

Quins drop to third place, one point ahead of Peebles who held the league leaders, Tynedale to a 5-5 draw.

As an English club Tynedale are ineligible to qualify for the National Youth Cup which means the two qualifiers look likely to from the group containing Selkirk, Kelso, Peebles and Gala Wanderers.
