Schools lacrosse: Scottish Open at Loretto frozen off

Scotland’s school lacrosse players suffered a real blow when Saturday’s Rathbones Scottish Open was cancelled at Loretto due to frozen pitches.

Featuring five Scottish schools – Glenalmond, Fettes, St Leonard’s, St George’s and hosts Loretto – plus five English schools, the Open had a major sponsor for the first time and, sadly, it will now not take place this year.

“It is really disappointing because so much work had gone in to the event in a bid to raise the profile this year,” said Fettes’ College sports assistant, Abbie Mitchell, who is also a Scottish lacrosse under-19 coach.

“We really had hoped to go ahead but had to cancel around lunchtime on Friday because one school was coming from London and another from Hertfordshire and it wouldn’t be fair to let them travel.”

However, the Rathbones sponsorship deal also includes next month’s Under-19 Home Internationals. Scotland will take on England, Wales plus one other invited team at Peffermill in Edinburgh on 18 March.
