Schools Hockey: Plain makes her mark for Scots

George Heriot's captain Fiona Plain played her part as the Scotland under-21s finished fourth at the junior European indoor championships in Stirling at the weekend.

The 17-year-old was selected for the high-quality event after starring for the Edinburgh school and the CALA Edinburgh club this season, and she did not let anybody down.

The Scots progressed through the first two days and were pitted against the Czech Republic in the third and fourth place play-off. The Czechs went ahead early on, but Plain nearly equalised only to see her shot cleared off the line.

The Scots did pull level, but eventually lost the match 3-1. However, the fourth-place finish means that Plain and other up-and-coming school pupils can look forward to playing the cream of Europe again in two years time.

Belarus won the event after a superb 5-4 win over Poland in a final watched by a large crowd.
