Schools hockey: Newlands goal seals bronze medal

In a strong defensive and disciplined display from Scotland, Selkirk High School’s Emily Newlands was the eventual match winner after her strike from a penalty corner broke the deadlock in the 31st minute.

With the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year, it was a chance for the youngsters to enhance claims for a place in the senior squad. “It was not only a good result but also a good performance,” said Linda Clement, the Scottish captain and the under-18 assistant coach.

“The girls made much progress throughout the tournament and we’ve been impressed by their ability to learn and improve.

“We can take plenty of positives from the four games as regards moving forward to the Europeans in July.”

In the under-16s, Scotland lost 4-0 to England in the Four Nations bronze medal match.

Bill Robson, Scotland under-16 girls head coach said: “Given that the players have played four games in four days and gave their all against the Dutch in a physically draining contest, it wasn’t surprising that we ran out of steam against England on the final day.

“Many of these girls have another year at Under-16 level and there are plenty positives to take away from the weekend.”
