Schools hockey: Hutchesons' Grammar complete title double

Hutchesons' Grammar won the under-18 girls indoor cup finals day in Perth at the weekend.

The team coached by former Olympian Rhona Simpson are now the Scottish outdoor and indoor champions and they were certainly on top form at the Bell's Sports Centre.

In the pool stages, Kelso High School came out on top in their section, with Mary Erskine's second and Strathallan third.

In the other pool defending champions George Heriot's defeated Hutchesons' 5-4 in a brilliant opener but both went through to the semi-finals, with Robert Gordon's dropping out.

Both last-four ties were thrilling encounters, Mary Erskine's defeating Heriot's 4-3 and Hutchesons' edging past Kelso HS by the same scoreline.

In the final Hutchesons' played some superb hockey to overwhelm Mary Erskine's 8-2.

Although there were no school sides involved in the boys' under-18 event, all of the best teenagers in the country took part for their clubs as Clydesdale ultimately took the spoils.

Meanwhile, the girls hopeful of making it into the Scotland under-16 outdoor squad for upcoming fixtures took part in their latest training day on Sunday.

All players who are in the wider squad, which was picked after the inter-district tournament last year, were at Hutchesons' Grammar.

The squad's coaches will now sit down to select their full and development squads in the coming weeks.
