Schools hockey: Heriot’s reach final in U13 tournament

GEORGE Heriot’s first-year girl’s hockey team finished second in the Loretto School under-13 tournament after narrowly losing 2-0 in the final to an English touring side.

Throughout the group stages, the girls remained unbeaten, playing some fast and entertaining hockey, before facing up to St Mary’s in the semi-finals. This encounter against their Edinburgh rivals proved to be a tight and hard-fought affair with neither team able to break the deadlock.

That meant that the game, and a place in the final, was decided by a ‘beat the goalie competition’. As this was the first time Heriot’s girls had participated in such a contest, the players were extremely nervous prior to taking their shots against the St Mary’s No 1. However, the Heriot’s girls scored all five goals to St Mary’s four.

The final was also a close encounter, but it proved one hurdle too many for the Edinburgh girls and the English touring side ran out eventual winners to take the trophy back across the border. However, finishing second was still a fine achievement for the Heriot’s girls, who were playing in their first tournament.

George Heriot’s Squad: Rachel Smith, Sarah Brogan, Zoe Carracher, Amy Harrison, Caitlin McRobbie, Maria Pelosi, Susie Robertson, Erin Stringer, Ella Watt, Kirsten Windever and Kirsty Yellowlees.
