Schools curling: Borders side win national crown

Saving the best for last, Kelso High School’s Cameron Bryce, his younger sister, Amy, plus Callum Potts and Neil Sutherland claimed the Scottish Schools’ Curling Championship at Murrayfield ice rink in Edinburgh.

The Borders team had lost the opening group match to Craigmount High School, but they took a 1-0 lead after the second end of the final against Stranraer Academy and went on to a relatively comfortable 4-1 win.

“This is a great way to finish my school curling career,” said Cameron, a sixth year pupil. “At the moment, I’m in the Scottish talent programme and hoping to move up to academy level.

“I’m wanting to do sports studies and psychology at Stirling University, partly because it would be a good place to continue my curling.

“It was extra special to have my sister in the team and our next event will be the Under-17 slam at Perth at the start of next month.”

The other three curlers will be able to defend next year. Neil and Callum are both in fifth year and Amy is in fourth year.

Stranraer had three teams in the finals – and it was the top side of Bobby Lammie, Neil Topping, and brothers Euan and Stewart Kyle that made it through to the final.

The scores were level at 1-1 after Stranraer snatched one at the fourth end but, at the next, Cameron scored three and he made it 4-1 after seven ends.
