Schools Badminton: Monthly award is fitting recognition for Dunbar efforts

Dunbar Grammar School has picked up the Bank of Scotland Badminton School of the Month Award, in recognition of their unfaltering support for Badminton Scotland's grassroots programme.

The award, which was presented by Nicola Venables, customer manager at Bank of Scotland's Dunbar branch, is reward for the East Lothian school which provides various opportunities for pupils to participate and develop their badminton skills.

With two lunchtime clubs, participation in the East Lothian S1 and S2 Leagues and a number of pupils now competing at local tournaments, badminton is thriving at the school.

Last November the S1 team won the East Lothian regional league for the first time ever, beating all five secondary schools in the area.

The school also has strong links to Dunbar's junior badminton club which runs at the school every week.

As a result, several pupils have been invited to join the East Lothian Development Squad with one player also being selected for the under-15 Lothian squad.

Paul Huish, the local sports co-ordinator, added: "It's fantastic for Dunbar Grammar to be nominated as the November Bank of Scotland School of the Month.

"The kids love their badminton and the various initiatives and support on offer via Badminton Scotland have given them the platform to continue playing on a regular basis, helping them to develop their badminton and social skills."
