Schools badminton: Flockart pedigree can serve him well

BADMINTON: A youngster with a terrific pedigree will be among the favourites for the boys’ Under-11 event at this weekend’s Glasgow School of Sport Championships at Bellahouston.

Calum Flockart is the son of eight-time Scottish Champion, Bruce, and his grandparents, Adam and Joanna, were also capped for Scotland.

The Cleish Primary school pupil is also a talented tennis player, but his granny reckons that family history is likely to take him down the shuttlecock route.

“He is coached by Adam and Bruce and, at this stage, it is all about enjoying it,” said Joanna, who won Commonwealth Games, World and European Championship medals.

Callum Smith (Duns Primary) is another talented youngster and he should be the No 2 seed in the Under-11s.

In the Under-13 events, Jack Riddell and Lloyd Holland, two of the new first-year intake at the Glasgow School of Sport, will be out to impress at the start of a new season.

Sarah Sidebottom, a second-year pupil at the School, will be one of the favourites in the girls’ Under-13 Championship.

Adam Pringle will also be challenging for the Under-13 title. He is the reigning Scottish Under-11 Champion.
