School sport: Szaranek makes splash as records tumble

SWIMMING: Auchmuty High School swimmer Mark Szaranek claimed the British short course junior record in the 200m individual medley at the East District age group championships in his home town of Glenrothes.

Fifteen-year-old Szaranek, who swims for Carnegie, posted a time of 2:04.38 to beat Daniel Lim into second and Lewis Kirby into third.

The main focus of the year for Szaranek is the British trials next month when selectors pick the Great Britain team that will go to the European Youth Olympics in July.

A number of other records were broken at the same meet - Rachael O'Donnell seta new Scottish age group and East District age group record in the 200m individual medley, Chelsea Lawson set an East District age group record in the 1,500m freestyle, Lauren Pirouret set a new East District age group record in the 800m and 1,500m freestyle and 17-year-old Dan Wallace set a new Scottish age group record in the 200m individual medley.
