School sport: Initiative to help disabled children

DISABILITY SPORT: Teachers interested in bringing sport to more disabled pupils are being urged to book their place on a course which can help them do this.

Just prior to Christmas, Scottish Disability Sport contacted all local authorities in the country to advise them of the UK Disability Inclusion Training Workshops, which can be set up in their area for free if there is enough demand.

The full-day workshop includes a mix of theory and practical delivery to allow participants to include people with a disability in physical activity and sport. A half-day version of the course has also developed, which focuses on the theory element. Staff interested should contact their local authority or Scottish Disability Sport.

Claire Morrison from Scottish Disability Sport said: "It is an exciting time for SDS, as it has received funding from sportscotland to develop our workforce and now has a team of regional staff to support the development of disability sport in Scotland.

"There are some great examples where PE teachers have included young people with a physical disability within mainstream programmes. The key thing is the ability and willingness for PE teachers to include young people as effectively as they can."
