Sandy Strang: Burton's trip is admirable

HATS off to Jamie Burton! The affable young RH Corstorphine batsman, who has made a major on-field impression since arriving this season from West, currently averaging over 40 in the SNCL Championship, is presently setting his cricketing sights well beyond leafy Barnton.

A former ICC Europe Coach of the Year, Jamie is heading off to Africa in the autumn to spread the cricketing gospel. "I'm travelling to Kenya for two weeks at the end of October to work with the Cricket Without Boundaries charity," he explains. "It has three main goals - to spread cricket through coaching children and teaching adults to coach, to link the sport to HIV/Aids awareness, and to bring together and empower local communities through cricket.

"I've already paid for my flights myself and have a further fund-raising target of 750 to provide kit to be left behind on the trip. I've already collected 100 from a car boot sale, and hope to raise significantly more through a Sixes Tournament on a Sunday in late July or early August, featuring, among others, an RHC team, my old club West, an Edinburgh Pro Select, and a Scotland Select."

RHC stalwart Arnie Sathiy said: "Already in his short time with us Jamie has been a terrific club contributor. He deserves every support in his inspirational African venture."
