Russell in running for Perth prize

PERTH continues its busy schedule with an evening meeting tonight then Ladies Day tomorrow, with the usual suspects among those vying for prizes.

Lucinda Russell's Beidh Tine Anseo is fancied in the Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle, while Donald McCain's Smuglin in the opening mares' hurdle also looks worth an interest on a seven-race card. A market move for Tony Martin's dark horse, November Papa Golf, in the novices' handicap hurdle would inspire confidence.

At Beverley yesterday, Frankie Dettori proved he has developed a newly-discovered fondness for the complex uphill circuit, and maintained his 100 per cent record at the track this term through Dance East.

Also successful aboard Mark Johnston's Hacienda in April, the Italian's only mount of the day had looked in fleeting trouble as Ezra Church drew clear in the New Minster Grandstand Maiden. Jeremy Noseda's 1-5 favourite gradually improved, however, and eventually won going away by four-and-a-half lengths.

Earlier on the card, Noodles Blue Boy chalked up his third success at the East Yorkshire track in the Annie Oxtoby Memorial Handicap.

'Horses for courses' is a well-worn cliche in racing circles – but it is nonetheless a significant guideline when assessing form lines on the Westwood. Noodles Blue Boy ably advertised that theory under Tony Hamilton to bring home his Beverley three-timer.

• Jockey Michael Darcy has been handed a 12-day ban by the Irish Turf Club for failing a breath test. Darcy was breathalysed at Limerick on 3 May before racing and after testing positive for alcohol was suspended from riding on that day and the matter was passed on to the Referrals Committee. The concentration of alcohol in his breath was registered at 42 micrograms – seven above the permitted limit.
