Rugby wrap-up

Currie underlined their determination to cling to the Premiership title when they clicked into gear to despatch Stirling County 43-20 at Bridgehaugh on Saturday.

Ally Donaldson's men clocked up seven tries from different players, with one apiece for Alan Whittingham, Mark Cairns, Dougie Fife, Ross Weston, Matt Scott and Jonny Smith, while Stu Simonsen opened his account for the club.

The result leaves the champions in fourth place ahead of Saturday's trip to face Hawick and a mouthwatering clash at home to Ayr the following week.

Elsewhere, Boroughmuir halted a three-match losing run when they saw off Dundee High 30-20 in what was a hard-fought encounter at Meggetland.

'Muir shrugged aside the late withdrawals of Edinburgh pros Jack Gilding and David Bishop to take all five league points and move back into the top five in the Premiership table.

Tries by Ross Neil, Ross Samson, Ally Warnock and Malcolm Clapperton, plus ten points from Warnock's boot, saw the Meggetland men home.

Clapperton believes the win will restore confidence among the players in Fergus Pringle's side and he insists that 'Muir remain title contenders, saying: "This puts us into a position going into the second phase that means we can challenge."

'Muir's Capital rivals Heriot's also rediscovered that winning feeling when they eased to a 43-17 win at Selkirk. Glenn Bryce touched down twice and there was a try apiece for Mark Lee, Colin Goudie, Greg Walker and Max Learmonth, plus 13 points from the reliable boot of Graham Wilson, to earn the win for the Goldenacre side.

Edinburgh Accies remain top of Division Two after posting a 34-21 win away to Hillhead/Jordanhill. Trailing 15-14 at half time, Accies stepped up a gear in the second period to bag a four-try bonus point.

The Raeburn Place men require one point to guarantee their place in the promotion play offs but it would take an unlikely series of results to prevent them from doing so.

Stewart's-Melville were also on the road but the Inverleith men's trip to face Jedforest ended in disappointment as they went down 34-15.

In Division Three, Musselburgh took a narrow defeat bonus point from their trip to face Dumfries, the reliable boot of Brian Walls contributing all of 'Burgh's points as they lost 19-18.

Meanwhile, Haddington chalked up their third win of the campaign when they saw off Dunfermline 23-15 at Neilson Park.
