Rugby: Wanderers and Musselburgh to contest Regional Shield

Murrayfield Wanderers and Musselburgh will meet in the RBS Edinburgh Regional Shield final in three weeks after they both safely came through their semi-final ties on Saturday.

In their tie, which was doubling up as a league match, Wanderers saw off Edinburgh University 34-16 in the shadow of the national stadium. The students had only made it to that stage last Thursday evening when they had got the better of Forrester in a much-delayed last-eight match.

And, at Stoneyhill, Musselburgh hit top form to defeat RBS East One champions Preston Lodge 41-14.

The match was much-anticipated as both sides had been in great form in their respective leagues this season and it was the team from the higher division that progressed. The winner of the final will join Dunfermline, Kilmarnock and Hawick YM in the national semi-finals.

On league business at the weekend RHC Cougars took the long road to Ellon and came back with a 32-3 win. It leaves them in fifth place in RBS National One with five matches left to play.

Lismore are still looking for that elusive first win of the season after Portobello defeated them 27-7 in RBS East One to stay comfortably in fourth place in the table.

There was a shock in RBS East Two when Dunbar lost for the first time in all competitions this term. They went to Earlston and were defeated 23-0 with Dalkeith also thumped in the Borders going down 41-0 at Hawick Harlequins. Elsewhere Penicuik beat Broughton 22-10.

There were big wins in RBS East Three for Edinburgh Northern and Inverleith.

Northern saw off Liberton 53-0 with Inverleith putting Queensferry to the sword 48-0. The former result saw Northern leapfrog the inactive Leith into top spot in the division.
