Wins for Edinburgh and Caledonia U18s

DISTRICT UNDER-18S: Edinburgh and Caledonia emerged as winners from the under 18 district matches at Peffermill yesterday.

In the first stage of national trials for Scotland under 18 selection, Edinburgh produced a formidable forward display against Borders to hit back in the second half after trailing 5-8 at the break and win 22-13. All of Edinburgh’s tries came from penalty kicks to the corner and subsequent driven line-outs resulting in scores for George Watson’s pair Matt Poole and Ally Miller, North Berwick prop Reece Paterson and Trinity Accies front row Rory Scott. The other points came from Merchiston full back Gavin Parker, who kicked one conversion.

For Borders, who looked the more fluent behind the scrum Peebles centre Ross Halliday crossed while, in the second half, winger Ian Sim finished off an impressive move. Hawick Wanderers stand-off , Matt Douglas, kicked one penalty.

In the other match Caledonia scored all their points in the first half to win 47-10 against a Glasgow side that finally found its form after the break.

Dollar Academy No 8 Alasdair Mackie scored a hat-trick of tries and there was a brace for Dundee High School flanker Chris Jollands.

Caledonia’s other points came from tries by Stirling centre Archie Russell and the Strathallan stand-off George Horne who landed six conversions.

For Glasgow, Louden Academy wing Paul Ramsay scored a first-half try, their other score coming from a second-half touchdown by Marr College lock Angus Johnston.
