Edinburgh Rugby open their EPCR Challenge Cup on Friday evening with a trip to the south-west of England to play Gloucester.
It is the first of four group stage matches Sean Everitt’s side will face in their bid to reach the knockout stages of the second-tier European club competition. They will host Bayonne at Hive Stadium next week then play Vannes and Black Lion in January.

Gloucester enjoyed a highly impressive away victory over Northampton Saints, beating the Premiership champions 25-17. The result was all the more remarkable given that Gloucester had lost the corresponding fixture 90-0 last season.

A new broadcast deal for the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup means Premier Sports has taken over from TNT Sports. The three-year deal was announced in August, cementing Premier Sports’ position as a major player in the sports television market. They have been broadcasting the URC since its inception and it means all Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors games are now shown on one network. Edinburgh’s game in Gloucester will be shown live on Premier Sports 2 from 7.45pm, with Chris Paterson and Simon Ward presenting. Premier Sports is available in the UK from £10.99 a month.

Scotland second-row Sam Skinner will make his first start of the season for Edinburgh but the capital club have left out a number of their international players due to rest protocols. Darcy Graham, Duhan van der Merwe, Ali Price, Pierre Schoeman, Ewan Ashman, Grant Gilchrist and Jamie Ritchie are all missing.
There is a first start for teenage prospect Freddy Douglas who made his Scotland debut last month before he had even played a competitive match for Edinburgh. There are also likely to be debuts from the bench for Liam McConnell and Rob Carmichael.
Argentine international Santi Carreras starts at full-back for Gloucester after his player of the match performance against Northampton. Christian Wade, the England cap and former American football player, is on the right wing. Scotland international Chris Harris is at outside centre for the Cherry and Whites who reached the Challenge Cup final last season, losing to the Sharks at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
