While Roy Hodgson’s men were struggling in France, ex-England head coach Steve McClaren was analysing the game for Sky Sports News.

England led the match through a Wayne Rooney penalty, though this was quickly pegged back by a Ragnar Sigurdsson equaliser.

England 1 - 2 Iceland: England knocked out by Iceland

Despite this, McClaren remained bullish on England’s chances, insisting they were still dominating their opponents. The commentators’ kiss of death then bite McClaren firmly on the backside as he had to watch Kolbeinn Sigthorsson fire Iceland in front seconds later.

He said: “They’ve continued dominating the game, playing in Iceland’s half.

“England have had two corners. Defending zonal, are Iceland, and England are causing them problems.

“It’s been the perfect response. You think ‘ok, let’s go again, keep dominating, keep going at Iceland’.

“The only thing they’ve got is the big boy up front Sigurdsson...”

He then corrects himself to say “Sigthorsson” just as the Nantes striker turned and fired a low shot that squirmed under the outstretched hand of Joe Hart. A stunned McClaren looks on before muttering an “oh... oh...” and remains silent for five seconds, taking in the gravity of the situation.

England would never recover from going 2-1 down, exiting the tournament at the end of the 90 minutes.
