Stuart Hogg faces the prospect of a lengthy ban today when he faces a Six Nations disciplinary committee panel in London after being sent off for a horror challenge in Cardiff on Saturday.

The Scotland and Lions full-back saw red 22 minutes into the 51-3 humiliation by Wales after a late shoulder to the head of fly-half Dan Biggar.

The Glasgow Warriors player is only the third Scotland player to be sent off in a Test match,  following Nathan Hines in 2002 and Scott Murray in 2006.

French referee Jerome Garces initially sin-binned Hogg but changed his decision to a red card after viewing the incident on the big screens at the Millennium Stadium.

Outgoing Scotland coach Scott Johnson has defended Hogg, saying that the full-back is not a dirty player.

Hogg himself issued a full apology for his behaviour. “I would like to apologise to my team-mates, the Scotland management and all Scotland supporters for what happened today,” he said after the game.  “I have let people down. I have said sorry in person to Dan Biggar and I have apologised to the referee, Jerome Garces.

“I always try to play hard and fair and what happened today was out of character for me. Once again, I’m very sorry.”
