Stirling County 10-27 Currie: Win boost for Currie

Currie coach Ally Donaldson acknowledged his team will have to build on this hard-fought win if they are to climb from their lowly station at the foot of the RBS Premiership.

“Training has been going well and the attitude is excellent and hopefully the guys will take some confidence from this win,” he said.

“We had difficult conditions but we played some decent rugby. When we got 17-3 up it was just a case of getting the tactics right. We had good defence in the second half and we got it right tactically.”

First-half tries by Richard Snedden and McInally, both converted by George Horne, who also chipped a penalty, gave Currie the platform for a deserved win. Stirling could only muster a Brian Archibald kick in response.

County improved thanks to the utilisation of an experienced bench after the break, but Ruaridh Smith stretched Currie’s lead when he booted a loose ball downfield and won the race to the touchdown, Horne again adding the extras. Stuart Edwards ran in for Stirling’s only try in 58 minutes, Archibald converting the score, but the final word went to Horne with a late penalty.

Stirling head coach Graeme Young was sanguine at the conclusion. “They got the jump on us,” he admitted. “You have to give Currie credit for their hunger and determination. They had more than us. We are staring down the barrel now, firmly entrenched in ninth. We are in a dogfight and will have to scrap for everything.”
