Stewart’s Melville make Finlay Calder club captain

Former Scotland and Lions legend Finlay Calder has been appointed club captain at Stewart’s Melville for season 2013/14.

During his playing career, back-row Calder played for the Inverleith-based club with great distinction, but was never the captain of the first XV.

Fast forward a few years and Calder has now been handed the role of club captain and will carry out various tasks for the RBS National League outfit throughout the coming season. This is set to include an involvement in the mentoring of young players and club president Colin Rigby said: “We are delighted to have Finlay involved in this role and it is great to have people like him around the club as we move forward.”

The coaching set-up at the club has also been revamped. Bruce McNaughton continues as head coach and Kevin Brown is forwards coach. Mark Burgess and James Robertson, who has joined from Murrayfield Wanderers, will head the club’s player development with Duncan Macdonald as coach of the second XV. Scotland Sevens man Scott Riddell will take on the role as head of age group coaching as the junior section of the club continues to grow.
