The Scots posted wins over Italy in Rome and France at BT Murrayfield, losing to Ireland in Dublin and England in Edinburgh. A total of 30 individuals took part, from captain Stuart Hogg to newcomer Kyle Steyn. The Scotsman’s rugby correspondent Duncan Smith gives his verdict on the thirty players...
5. Sam Johnson - 7
The quiet Queenslander has gone from shy newcomer at Scotstoun to one of the first names on Townsend’s team-sheet, nailing down that No 12 jersey. No heroics this year to rival 2019's Twickenham miracle try, but a steady performer in all matches. Photo: Ross Parker - SNS Group

He’s got it all. Height, pace, a huge boot. If it wasn’t for the small matter of Stuart Hogg this 23-year-old former Edinburgh Academical would be Scotland’s full-back. But his talents are being used on the wing and he did fine in this championship. Photo: Ross Parker - SNS Group / SRU
7. Adam Hastings - 8
Plunged in to the pivotal playmaker role in the wake of the Finn Russell fiasco, Hastings has been tested but prevailed. One shocker in Rome (where he still bagged a late try!) can be excused for a 23-year-old dealing with a situation not of his choosing. He was flawless in the win over France. 8. Ali Price - 7
If Scottish rugby has one thing it’s a rich tradition in scrum-halves. Wales may have its “outside-half factory” (copyright Max Boyce) but Scotland has always had a rich vein of nines to mine. With Greig Laidlaw departing the scene, Price has grasped the opportunity. An interesting tussle for the jersey at club and country level with George Horne lies ahead but he holds the upper hand Photo: Gary Hutchison - SNS Group / SRU
