Sevens: Watsonians step up their challenge

Watsonians stepped up their challenge in the Kings of the Sevens race by retaining their Kelso title with a 26-24 victory over Edinburgh Accies to move into second place behind leaders Gala.

The Myreside club came through their group comfortably before inflicting a 26-0 defeat on Melrose in the semis. Accies had impressive wins over Jed Forest and Selkirk, then, in the semis, overcame Kelso.

In the final Watsonians led 19-0 with tries from winger Scott McKean, stand-off Mike Ker and scrum half Jack Ferguson, who was voted player of the tournament, but three tries by Alex Blair and then a touchdown by Euan Bonner gave Accies a 24-19 lead. Watsonians replacement Ramsay Young then scored a breakaway try to level, leaving Ker to kick the winning conversion.
