Selkirk 12 '“ 31 Melrose

Melrose warmed up for their BT Cup semi-final and Premiership play-off double-header against Ayr with a comfortable win in their final home league game of the season, writes Atholl Innes at Philiphaugh.

Already relegated Selkirk battled hard, but were unable to match Melrose’s clinical play. Melrose shot into an early lead and were 14 points up after 14 minutes when Grant Runciman twice went over from close range and Joe Helps converted both.

Selkirk grasped a grip of the game and Darren Clapperton scored in the right-hand corner after the touch down was confirmed by the touch judge, but Rory Banks failed with the conversion.

Melrose were soon on the front foot, pushing Selkirk back, and scrum half Murdo McAndrew scored twice, the second into injury time, and Helps converted the second try for a 26-5 interval lead.

Selkirk were rewarded in 64 minutes when Callum Marshall drove over and Banks converted to close the gap. However, Melrose remained in control and Ally Grieve touched down following loose Selkirk play on their own line.

Selkirk ended with most of the pressure, but Melrose never looked like conceding more points.
