Scott Hastings remembered with gold numbered Scotland jersey as number 13 given special honour

Tribute to 1990 Grand Slam hero who died in May

Scotland will pay tribute to the great Scott Hastings in Saturday’s match against Fiji in the form of a specially embroidered No 13 jersey.

The 1990 Grand Slam hero died aged 61 on May 17 and will be remembered before and during this weekend’s Nations Championship fixture at Murrayfield.

Ollie Smith, who has been selected against Fiji in Hastings’ old position of outside centre, will wear a jersey commemorating the passing of the Scotland and Lions hero. The number 13 will be displayed in gold and Hastings’ name and a list of some of his achievements will be embroidered into the design.

Hastings, who made his Test debut alongside brother Gavin in the 1986 Five Nations victory over France at Murrayfield, was the 848th international to be selected for Scotland and that number will also feature on the jersey.

“We've thought about what we can do just to make sure Scott's legacy as a Scotland player is on show,” said Gregor Townsend, the current Scotland coach and a former team-mate of Hastings’ in the national team. “There'll be a build-up before the game, messages to supporters and people watching on TV will see the tributes to Scott.

“We're highlighting his number, number 13. The iconic images I have of Scott when I was a supporter was of him playing in that 13 jersey against England in the Grand Slam game in 1990.

“I got to play alongside him but the message we want to send out there is, ‘Scott, you were the 13 for so many years, so we're going to have that number in gold’ and it'll stand out. I think it'll be a great moment for the supporters to show their appreciation before the game and see his legacy during the game.”
