Scotland U20s 24-6 England U20s: Wee Scots make history

SCOTLAND under-20s made history last night by defeating England at this age level for the first time.

The try count was 4-0 in favour of the young Scots against last season’s Junior World Championship runners-up. The victory was fully deserved such was Scotland’s commitment in defence and their high-tempo attacking game, the only area in which they were not dominant being the set scrum. “To score four ties against England is very special.” said the Scotland coach, John Dalziel.

Scotland led 12-6 at half time having scored a sensational opening try by Blair Kinghorn, who ran out of defence before exchanging passes with centre Rory Hutchinson before outpacing the remaining fragments of the England defence, the other score coming from prop Murray McCallum converted by Kinghorn .

England’s points came from two penalty goals by Joe Simmonds but that was to be their total as Scotland kicked on in the second half with a short-range try by skipper Scott Cummings and then a breakaway try by flanker Matt Smith from a line-out. Kinghorn, who was voted man of the match, added the conversion to seal the win.
